The reflection of Ukraine’s soul, Kiev

There is more than a road to drive through between Lithuania and Ukraine. These countries are also joined by mutual contact points of history. Kiev is a true cradle of Slavic culture, and through the centuries it has seen many upheavals. Today, this gilded city beckons with its shimmering rooftops, delicious food aromas, and a solid unity of old and modern times. Flights to Kiev may not be too memorable, but all that you’ll see there will keep your heart pleasantly quivering for a long time.

How to travel?

Comfortable flights from Vilnius to Kiev will not last longer than an hour. After landing at the Boryspil International Airport, you may choose the best way for you to travel further. If you simply can’t resist the allure of train tracks, your choice should most probably be cosy city trams. Excellent metro system will not leave anyone indifferent either.

Train tracks are what move yet another means of transport that Lithuanian people know very well, and that is a funicular, which can take you up the Mykhailivo Mountain. All the most beautiful city spots can also be reached by comfy buses and trolleybuses. Public transport prices are not very high, so your stay in Kiev can be fun and economical at the same time.

What to taste?

Even if all you’re planning is a one-day-trip, you must get a taste of some Ukrainian food. Visiting the capital will simply seem dull, unless you try out the classic Chicken Kiev (kotleta po-kyivsky). Some distinguishable sour soups by the name of borscht are prepared in Ukraine as well. These are very filling, mostly made with meat and vegetables, and one portion of it may even substitute for several other meals. If you get a craving for some street food, definitely try some belyashes; locals love to buy them too.

What to see?

Kiev attracts curious travellers with dozens of museums, theatres, parks and other cultural symbols. Acquaintance with the colourful city is best kicked off by visiting the Golden Gate and then, afterwards, one of the oldest in the world, St. Sophia’s Cathedral. If you wish to see some more cathedrals, Kiev is just the place for that.

Everyone interested in culture should consider paying a visit to Mikhail Bulgakov Museum and the National Art Museum of Ukraine. If stronger impressions are what you really seek, go visit the museums of War, Holodomor, Chernobyl or Kiev Pechersk Lavra monastery burials. Those looking for romance should visit Andrejevskij Spusk Street, Botanical Gardens, and the Independence Square, which is decorated by gracious buildings, flower gardens and fountains.

What to do?

If flying to other countries for you means calm and relaxation, why not spend some time in the summer by the Dnieper River and enjoy the sunrays. When longing for some nightlife suddenly arises, just head over to the main city street, Khreshchatyk. If you’re visiting Kiev with your children, show them the inhabitants of the giant local zoo, or you can go have fun at Kiev’s Water Park. The city is full of entertainment options. Don’t be surprised, if after a wonderful trip is finished, plane tickets to Kiev will interest you anew.
