Tunis – a drop of millennium old oil

Tunis, the capital city of Tunisia, may appear similar to fragrant essential oil, binding together the best cultural qualities of the region. It is believed that the city was first established by Phoenicians. Since then, many others have left their imprint as well: Roman, Arab, and French people, representing both Christianity and Islam. Because of these influences, the capital not only beckons with its amazing natural landscapes and ideal climate conditions but also impressive architecture.

How to travel?

The Tunis-Carthage International Airport is located 8 kilometres outside the city of Tunis, which can be reached by various modes of public transport: buses, taxis, or rented cars. You can also view the city by using a modern metro system or subway services.

What to taste?

Tunis’ cuisine is where many tastes from different cultures mix. Although most of local dishes are similar to the French ones, you will also find food with Arabic and African motifs. City locals love shorba, which is vegetable soup with veal meat, as well as various purée dishes. Many dishes are made with tuna and served with couscous, baguettes, and other kinds of bread.

While visiting Tunis, try the local deep fried pastry dish with eggs, tuna, or other fillings, called brik, or choose a tasty omelette with meat and pepper, tajine. When visiting a local snack bar, order some chapati sandwich with eggs, or Tunisian crepes with various fillings.

For dessert, choose pastries with almonds, dates, and cactus fruits. Indulge in some date liqueur, iced coconut palm milk, coffee with cardamom, and palm wine.

What to see?

The colourful Tunis has been filled with numerous details of both ancient and modern times in its multi-millennia life. If you wish to look into the history of Tunis, head over to the Medina and the old town that’s criss-crossed by narrow alleys. Visit the oldest Tunis’ mosque of Aghlabid Al-Zaytouna (“Mosque of the Olive”). It is believed that a magic three once grew in its place.

View all the striking mosaics of the Bardo Museum. Here, you will also find some ancient jewellery and household items. Worth paying attention to are the Bey’s palace with its history and art artefacts and the old Tunis University. Outer city area is filled with modern French-style architecture objects that perfectly express contemporary buildings’ trends and fashions.

What to do?

Great places for getting acquainted with local culture and shopping for return gifts are the Medina with its markets and the district of Suk el Attarin, brimming with exotic and spreading lush aromas of numerous offered perfumes. After a lengthy trip, why not find relaxation at the gorgeous Tunis beaches or in SPA centres, indulging in sea water therapy sessions.

For a more active leisure, choose diving activities, during which you will be able to observe sunken Second World War ships and underwater reefs. Adventures and unique cultural experiences are all ingredients of the Tunis aroma oil.
