Useful advice for travelling to Somalia (SOM)

The Indian Ocean waves washing the shore, legend-like stories about pirates, nomadic culture of the locals, hot and pleasant climate, little visited and seemingly private beaches all together make flights to Somalia a great choice. Holiday spent in this North-eastern African country will let you explore unique local culture and history as well as escape from the noise of civilisation and relax.

Preparing for the trip

Before you start your journey, you should first take care of your health and get vaccinated against yellow fever, as it is a high risk in the country. You should also acquire necessary medicine and get vaccinations against other health risks of Somalia: malaria, hepatitis A and B, meningococcal disease, and typhoid fever. Curious and active tourists should renew their vaccinations against diphtheria and tetanus as well. Lastly, remember that Lithuanian citizens require a visa to enter Somalia.

Transportation and travel charges

The best ways to get better acquainted with Somalia are to use local public transport – buses and taxis – or to rent a car. However, you should consider only travelling together with larger tourist groups to lessen the possibility of any dangers that may wait on the road. This way, you will also not need to plan for your travel route in advance.

The official local currency is the Somali shilling (SOS). Ten shillings are equal to approximately 2 euro cents. The standard of living in Somalia is very low, and the prices are also not high. Remember that there is no way to pay using a credit card or withdraw money from a cash point available. This means that you will always need to have some cash on you, preferably USA dollars. In Somalia, you can have lunch in a cheap restaurant for 5 euros and buy a cappuccino for about 85 euro cents. In local shops, a bottle of water will cost you 50 euro cents; you can buy a loaf of freshly baked local bread for the same amount. Public transport tickets cost 1.30 euro, and a one kilometre long taxi ride will cost you approximately 2.20.

Additional information:

  • Distance from Vilnius to Somalia’s capital Mogadishu is 6131 kilometre.
  • Official languages are Somali and Arabic.
  • The country belongs to the UTC + 3 time zone.
  • Best return gifts choices

Somalia is proud of its flowering plant of henna and the dye that is prepared from it. Your friends and loved ones will be pleased with a gift of some temporary henna tattoos; these tattoos are an important part of local Somali culture. Another way to create long-lasting memories about your trip is to purchase some traditional Somali ceramics art products or wood carvings.
