Draconic and cosy – Ljubljana

The diverse capital of Slovenia, Ljubljana is said to be protected by dragons, which are symbolical guards of the city. The founding legend says that Ljubljana was established by the Greek hero Jason, after together with his army he slew a dragon. The city is rather small in size (similar in its size to Kaunas), and most sightseeing objects can be reached on foot.

How to travel?

Cheap flights to Ljubljana are available from both Kaunas and Vilnius airports, and these will offer you to get acquainted with Ljubljana in just a few days’ time. Therefore, this is a great destination point for short holiday trips. The city is full of bicycles that are easy and comfortable to use riding through winding city alleys, for locals and tourists alike.

What to taste?

Slovenes really like eating horse meat; therefore, you will find many offers of different horse meat dishes around the city: steaks, stews, and goulashes. A more peculiar dish is sweet buckwheat dumplings with almonds and nettle sauce. Also worth trying are Alpine milk and Slovene bread. Indulge in delicious desserts, such as potica (nut roll), gibanica (strudel cake with apples and cheese), or palačinka (thin pancakes with hazelnut- and whipped cream).

What to see?

Begin your acquaintance with Ljubljana by the phenomenal old town and its extraordinary blend of Baroque and Secession architectural styles. The Dragon Bridge is yet another important symbol of Slovenia, together with the Triple Bridge (Tromostovje), connecting the Prešeren Square and the Ljubljana castle. This medieval castle is located high on a hill, on the right side of Ljubljanica river, and it offers a gorgeous panoramic city view, adorned with white mountain tops. Definitely pay a visit to the Baroque Church of St. Michael, view the luxurious Robba fountain that symbolises three rivers of Sava, Krka, and Ljubljanica. To the west from the city centre, you will find Roman city ruins. Finally, in order to sense the pulse of the so-called European green capital, visit Tivoli park. It is the largest park in Ljubljana, and it will let you surround yourself with nature.

What to do?

While visiting Ljubljana, tasting real Slovene wine is a must. Try staying overnight at the “Celica” guest house. It is actually a former prison, with barred windows and cell rooms that have been conveniently transformed into guest rooms of unique design details and style. Ljubljana is considered to be amongst the cosiest and most youthful European capitals. The city is constantly pulsing with nightlife rhythms; many cultural events and art festivals take place in Ljubljana.
