Amsterdam: the capital of unrestricted freedom
Amsterdam is a true multi edged urban masterpiece. By looking from different perspectives, you can see the impressive mosaic of the city. Romantic souls are drawn here by pleasant water sounds, narrow alleys, and intricate little bridges. Those who love to celebrate life gather here to view the intriguing districts of bodily freedom. The ones seeking art will be happy to find a true cultural fountain in Amsterdam.
How to travel?
The international Schiphol Airport is the finishing point of planes that go to Amsterdam. The biggest airport in the Netherlands is located 9 kilometres away from the city centre. You can cross this distance using a bus, a taxi, or getting on metro.
Amsterdam is called the city of bicycles for a reason: locals are head over heels for this ecological means of transportation. You can easily make a trip across the whole city using a bike. If the weather isn’t too great, you can always use metro or any other public transport services
What to taste?
If you wish to understand how and why Amsterdam is unique, definitely start from tasting Dutch dishes, which are exquisitely delicious. Especially popular is a pea and ham soup ertwensoep, mashed vegetables with sausage (stamppot), and beef stew (hutspot). We recommend tasting some fresh herring (maatjes) and smoked eel as well.
For dessert you should order some fantastically tasty stroopwafels waffles or ice cream. For dinner, try some cheese: Edam, Gouda or Leidse kaas with caraways, as well as some stuffed pancakes. You can quench your thirst with different sorts of beer, cocktails, and tea.
What to see?
Amsterdam at daytime and Amsterdam at night are two different cities. We recommend exploring both of them. By day, visit the gate of St. Anthony, the Gothic Oude Kirk (Old Church), and the Royal Palace. Pay a visit to the famous flower market of Amsterdam. Definitely check out the museums of Anne Frank, Vincent van Gogh, as well as the Historical and the National Maritime museums.
At night, indulge in the aura of city lights slowly coming to shine, the cosiness of intricate little bridges and phantasmagorical shapes of houses all around you. Go visit Amsterdam’s bars and night clubs and wander around the Red light district. This part of the city is no less interesting.
What to do?
Amsterdam offers many strange visiting places. Try out the Pipe, Prostitution, and Pianola Museums, or the Cannabis information centre. A dose of ultramodern culture can be obtained in NDSM–werf, which is an avant-garde arts town, or you can visit the EYE Film Institute of free films.
You can find some return gifts in the Heineken brewery, in the markets of flowers or Albert Cuyp, as well as during the local festivals. Amsterdam is a city that unites churches and beer, museums and legal drugs. Therefore, you can be sure that after a trip here, you will be left with pockets full of original souvenirs and head full of exciting memories.
