Useful advice for travelling to Myanmar (MM)

Flights to Myanmar, the largest South Eastern Asian country, will please every “collector” of exotic holiday trips. The country that is also known as Burma will make everyone engaged in its rich cultural background and deep-rooted Buddhist traditions that will interest most westerners. However, before you start your journey in Myanmar, you should understand several important things about this country.

Preparing for the trip

Lithuanian citizens will need a visa to enter Myanmar. Detailed information on how to obtain it is offered by the workers of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the nearest embassy.

All active and curious travellers should get their health insured and vaccinated against yellow fever and malaria. It is also recommended to get vaccinations against hepatitis A and B, typhoid fever, and renew your vaccinations against diphtheria and tetanus if that is necessary.

Transportation and travel charges

The best ways to get better acquainted with Myanmar are to use planes, trains, buses, cars, and taxis. However, keep in mind that there are some territories closed off to foreign tourists in this country. Travellers who value comfort above all should also avoid train rides, as most of local railway vehicles are old and, gently speaking, unusual for some western tourists.

While visiting the country, you can pay for your purchases using the official local currency, the Burmese kyat (MMK). Ten kyats are equal to approximately 0.01 euro. Obviously, living costs in Myanmar are much lower than in Lithuania. For example, you can have a filling lunch for only 500 to 3000 kyats in a cheaper restaurant and for up to 8000 in an expensive one. In local shops, a 1 litre water bottle will cost you about 300 kyats, and you can order a cup of cappuccino for approximately 3000. Public transport tickets cost no more than 250 kyats, and a one kilometre long taxi ride will cost you approximately 1200.

Additional information:

  • Official language is Myanmar. However, in tourist zones, you can also somewhat communicate in English.
  • Distance from Vilnius to Myanmar’s capital Naypyidaw is approximately 6995 kilometres.
  • Myanmar belongs to UTC +6:30 time zone.
  • Best return gifts choices

Authentic souvenirs are a sure way to capture precious moments of your visit to Myanmar. There are many options available: from handmade lacquer bowls and vases to precious stones (the latter ones are best purchased in a shop instead of a street market). Textile products, silk paintings, and wood carvings reflecting Buddhist culture will also make great return gifts.

Cheap flights to Myanmar provide an amazing opportunity that is not to be missed. A holiday in this country will let you explore a new and exciting culture of South East Asian Myanmar in depth and create long-lasting memories from your journey.
