A city on seven hills – the destination point for those who miss peacefulness

Just beside seven hills and the river of Bic, there lies Moldova’s capital Chisinau, with its strangely shaped apartment blocks that can be seen from far away. Chisinau is a city of hot summers and snowy winters, and it welcomes its guests with a wide smile and a glass of wine. Not many tourists take on the offer of Moldovan hospitability, so you will not have to fight for a picture of cultural relicts in the capital.

How to travel?

Emanating peacefulness, calmness, and cosiness, the Eastern European diamond Chisinau can be reached by plane, after it lands in the city’s international airport. The airport has several times been named the best one among the CIS countries, and it is located 13 kilometres away from the city centre.

We recommend making your acquaintance with the capital by taking a bus, a minibus, or a taxi. Sightseeing objects of Chisinau can also be viewed by going on foot. However, if you prefer public transportation, you can always get on a bus or a trolleybus.

What to taste?

Chisinau offers many famous Moldovian cuisine dishes: porridge made out of yellow maize flour (mamaliga), sheep milk cheese (branza), or traditional pastries with various fillings (placintas). For lunch, you could order some vegetable soup chorba or meat soup zama, as well as some cooked cabbage rolls with grape leaves.

If you get thirsty, order some fruit and berries kompots and juice. Definitely try some Moldavian wine (ask for homemade drinks in the restaurants) and brandy.

What to see?

Chisinau differs from many other European cities because of its rich greenery. The city beckons with its many plants-surrounded squares and yards. The beauty of Chisinau architecture can be viewed by walking along the Stefan cel Mare si Sfint Boulevard, while a park of the same name is the best place to observe the exquisite nature.

Just nearby, you will find a neoclassical orthodox cathedral, the majestic Triumphal Arch, and the monument for Stephen the Great. Another remarkable place is the Avenue of Moldova’s Rulers, which is a monument for many notable famous Moldovan personalities. History of Moldova can be closer viewed at the National Museum of Archaeology and History.

What to do?

One of the sweetest and most romantic entertainment activities in Chisinau is the dancing and singing fountains. You can find those just by the elegant and unique looking National Opera and Ballet Theatre, which we also recommend visiting. If your trip is in summer, take a part in a song and dance festival, Martisor.

Board a bus from Chisinau, and you can reach other Moldovan cities as well. You will find wine breweries and wine cellars, traditional crafts and entertainment possibilities. Cheap flights to Chisinau will be a perfect opportunity to whole families for them to start their acquaintance with the country of Moldova and to spend a peaceful but engaging holiday there.
