Riga: the beautiful younger sister of Vilnius and Tallinn

The neighbour Riga is the biggest city in the Baltic countries. It is proud of its orderly, cosy and colourful old town, as well as many museums and cultural heritage objects in the city. Wherever you turn, everywhere you will find examples of striking architecture and buildings with unique history. A weekend in Riga is a perfect idea for a fun, engaging and enlightening holiday trip to your neighbour country.

How to travel?

Cheap flights to Riga are short and therefore indeed very cheap. They finish at the International Riga Airport, which is located 10 kilometres away from the city centre. You can cross that distance by bus or in a taxi. The city itself offers antique trams, as well as modern and cosy buses and trolleybuses. If you wish to economize, purchase a multiple day ticket or an e-ticket beforehand.

What to taste?

Latvian cuisine is very similar to the Lithuanian one. We recommend trying several traditional and unique dishes: sour barley soup with milk (skabputra), sweet bread soup, baked herring, and potato salad with meat and herring, called rassols.

The most well-known Latvian dessert is sweet porridge with semi-sour sauce. You can quench your thirst with herb teas, kvass, sap drink, or even curdled milk. In the evening, enjoy some tea or cocktails with the legendary Riga Balsam. It is also a great choice for return gifts.

What to see?

Riga beckons with its harmonic beauty from afar. Travellers find many churches with high pointed turrets and cosy narrow streets full of colourful renewed or modern houses in their trips. The latter have become true city symbols. Riga, one of the most beautiful European cities, is best looked upon from above. Great panoramic view will open up if you climb the St. Peter’s Church tower.

While you’re still in the old town, you should definitely go and see the Riga Castle, Riga Cathedral, and gothic buildings of the Great and Small Guilds. Just nearby, you will also find the majestic House of the Blackheads and the Medieval Three Brothers building complex. The modern side of the city is observed in the immense Triangular Bastion or the sophisticated Railway Bridge crossing the Daugava River.

What to do?

In the warm seasons, you can enjoy the old town romance while taking a trip on a tourist ship. You can retreat to nature in the Kronvalda, Mežaparks, or Esplanade parks, as well as by visiting the Vermanes garden or the Riga Zoo. You can find many return gifts and delicacies in the vast domed Central market, which is visible from far away.

The beautiful neighbour Riga has a lot to offer and surprise with even the most experienced European travellers. This city is not unlike a piece of Baltic amber, with mysterious alleys, intriguing historical tales, and many works of art as its inclusion.
