Useful advice for travelling to Kenya (KEN)

Kenya is filled with mountains and deserts, sunny beaches and coral reefs, along with wild animals and colourful local tribes. This is why flights to Kenya will best suit contrasts lovers. Kenya’s guests’ eyes will feast upon stunning shores of the Indian Ocean, thick meadows, tropical rainforests, and national parks full of wild animals: lions, elephants, leopards, and so on. If African landscapes look particularly charming to you, you should undoubtedly choose a holiday trip to this wonderful East African country.

Preparing for the trip

Before you start your journey, remember to get compulsory vaccinations against yellow fever first; yellow fever is a high risk in Kenya and you may need to provide a vaccination proving certificate. You should also get vaccinated against malaria, hepatitis A and B, typhoid fever, the meningococcal disease, and tetanus if necessary before entering the country.

If you wish to see wild animals from up close on a safari, you should choose the dry period of the year for your travels: from January to the end of March or from July to the ending of October. When the climate is dry, there is a bigger possibility to see large numbers of animals near various bodies of water.

Transportation and travel charges

Popular means of transport in Kenya are matatus, local minibuses that are useful for travelling from town to town. Up to 20 passengers are able to use one such minibus at a time, and a 50 kilometres ride will cost approximately 80 Kenyan shillings, or 0.71 euro. However, matatu drivers are often very inconsiderate and a safer alternative is to use taxis instead. Kenyan taxis will usually take 8 passengers at a time, but you can always arrange for the driver to take less people for an additional sum of money. Usually, a one kilometre taxi ride will cost you 1.79 euro.

One euro is equal to approximately 112.16 Kenyan shillings (KES). Living costs in Kenya are somewhat lower than in Lithuania. For example, you can have lunch in a cheap restaurant for 2.60 euros and buy a cup of coffee for 2. In local shops, a 1.5 litre water bottle will cost you less than 1 euro; you can buy one kilogram of fruit for 1 to 3 euros, while one kilogram of chicken breast will cost you less than 5. You can purchase twelve eggs for approximately 1.42 euro.

Additional information:

  • Kenya belongs to the UTC+3 time zone.
  • Official languages are English and Swahili.
  • Distance from Vilnius to Kenya’s capital Nairobi is 6313 kilometres.
  • A visa is required to enter the country and it will be issued at the airport of your arrival for approximately 50 USA dollars.
  • Best return gifts choices

Although Kenya’s locals rarely drink coffee themselves and prefer tea instead, all true coffee lovers will appreciate Kenyan coffee. You could also choose from numerous handmade souvenirs that are being offered alongside roads, but be careful to check the item’s quality first. Tribal souvenirs are particularly popular: Masai bead decorations, woven sisal footwear, dried pumpkin dishes, and traditional sarongs, along with high quality wooden giraffe statuettes.

Be sure to avoid seemingly innocent looking items that you may be stopped for at the airport. It is prohibited to leave the country with leather products and stuffed animals, ivory products, diamonds, and even the national currency, Kenyan shillings.
