Useful advice for travelling to Hungary (HU)

Located in the very heart of Europe, Hungary beckons with its stunningly beautiful contrasts of nature, amazing dessert wine, and Habsburg architecture. The country is divided into two parts by the blue river of Danube, and walking on its shores is truly a wonderful experience. Every year, Hungary’s capital Budapest, often called the pearl of Danube, attracts millions of tourists that want to observe the beauty of this charming city.

Preparing for the trip

When going to Hungary, there are no compulsory vaccinations required. However, it is recommended to enquire about any possible epidemic outbreaks reported in the country before you head out. If that is the case, you should get vaccinated, in order to avoid any health problems.

The best way to prepare for your trip is to print some maps and mark any places you’re planning to visit. This way, you can also easily decide on a travel route. It will be easier to enjoy local Hungarian culture if you read about it beforehand.

Transportation and travel charges

At the moment, Hungary is a very popular travel destination point, preferred by many travellers, and there are frequent flights available to this country. Hungary has quite cheap and well-developed public transport systems: metro, buses, trolleybuses, trams, and funiculars. The only drawback is that public transport is available only until eleven in the evening. Much as in many other countries, taxi services are widely used in Hungary and are a perfect choice when someone is in a hurry or needs to travel very late at night. There is also a possibility to rent and drive a car.

Official local currency is the Hungarian forint. Thousand forints equal approximately 3 euros and 19 cents. The standard of living in Hungary is similar to that in Lithuania, possibly somewhat on the lower side. However, Hungarian prices are varying. For example, a litre of petrol costs less than 300 forints, while ten public transport tickets will cost you as much as 1 100 forints.
