Useful advice for travelling to Haiti (HT)

Washed by crystal clear waves of the Caribbean Sea, Haiti meets all its guests that seek something authentic and real. After having experienced many misfortunes, today the country is proudly raising its head. Contrasting landscape, unique culture, sandy beaches, and peculiar cuisine beckon numerous travellers. Holiday flights to Haiti provide an amazing opportunity to spend a unique and engaging holiday in the land of strong-willed and hospitable people.

Preparing for the trip

All tourists that wish to visit Haiti for a short period of time are free to do this without a visa. There are also no particular vaccination requirements for entering the country. It is recommended to beware of mosquito bites, avoid drinking tap water, and consuming non-heat-treated food. Before heading out, you should also acquire some anti-malaria medicine, get vaccinated against hepatitis A and B, and renew your diphtheria and tetanus vaccinations if necessary.

Transportation and travel charges

Main Haitian roads are usually good quality. However, reaching more distant areas of the country may be somewhat difficult. It’s best to travel using vehicles of your chosen travel agency, but you could also choose local planes, buses, taxis, and rental cars for inner-country trips. During the rainy season (April to October), roads may be flooded or filled with mudslides.

You can pay for your purchases using official local currency, Haitian gourdes (HTG). One gourde is equal to approximately 0.021 euro. Living costs in Haiti are lower than in Lithuania. For example, you can have lunch in a cheap restaurant for 252 gourdes and buy a cappuccino for about 227. In local shops, a 1.5 litre water bottle will cost you 110.33 gourdes; you can buy one kilogram of cheese for about 294 gourdes, while one kilogram of chicken breast will cost you approximately 462. Public transport tickets cost about 22.46 gourdes, and a one kilometre long taxi ride will cost you about 42.50.

Additional information:

  • Official languages are French and Haitian Creole.
  • Haiti belongs to the UTC –5 time zone.
  • Distance from Vilnius to Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince amounts to 5583 kilometres.
  • Best return gifts choices

Haiti locals have a knack for making old things appear new again. Some of the most original souvenirs bought in this country are made from steel barrels or aluminium. Cut out and processed sheets later become colourful key chains, decorations, or paintings. Figures made from papier-mâché, wooden photograph frames, towel holders, and trays will also make great return gifts.

Cheap flights to Haiti bring travellers to a colourful country of beautiful nature, that’s currently re-discovering the benefits of tourism. A holiday trip spent in Haiti will please those who are tired of busy crowds, unafraid of long distances, and dreaming about a different and fulfilling cultural exploration of a trip.
