The most beautiful city in Crete – the romantic Chania

Narrow alleys covered with big cobblestones, and colourful little houses that seem to pile onto each other both make Chania similar to Venice that is so beloved by all the romantics. Cosiness, fine architecture, and impressive gifts of nature all make Chania a tourist attraction object often titled the most beautiful city in Crete.

How to travel?

Naturally, in order to get to Chania, one must first reach Crete. This small island actually has three airports: flights from all over the world reach their finish at the airports of Heraklion, Chania, and Sitia. Each of them provides taxis, but in case there are no available ones left, minibuses will take you from the airport to the city centre, and back.

Travelling in Crete is a pleasant experience. Distances are small and the local public transportation system is well developed. Car renting points can also be found, so that even the most demanding tourist will be satisfied with the transportation.

What to taste?

The island of Crete is famous for its fresh and delicious dishes of big portions. We definitely recommend visiting several cafeterias in this city and tasting some fruit and vegetable salads that beckon with their delicious aromas. After you have a snack, many bars and cafés will offer you to try some of their deserts, fruits, or will even suggest having some raki, which is a Greek alcoholic drink similar to vodka. Therefore, everyone will be happy with the local hospitality, lovers of filling food, and fans of alcoholic beverages alike.

What to see?

Chania city pride and the object of many tourists’ wonder is the Elafonissi Beach covered with fine pink sand. Chania’s symbol, a lighthouse, can be seen from the beach. Also nearby are the White Mountains, or Lefka Ori, with the 16 km long Samaria Gorge that is one of the most impressive gorges in Europe.

After leaving the beach area, city architecture takes up the whole view. There are many Venetian, Turkish, and neoclassical elements present in the buildings of the Fortification of Chania, the Old Venetian Harbour, Saint Francis Monastery, and the Regent Palace.

What to do?

After taking a look around the city, it is time to visit Chania’s Nautical and Byzantine Museums, to shop in the 500 metre long main old town street that’s brimming with local hand-made leather goods and souvenir shops, or simply to relax in a small but cosy water park of Limnoupolis; a great day is guaranteed!
