Tallinn awaits culture seeking travellers

Tallinn invites everyone to take a walk along narrow alleys that seemed to have popped out right from the middle ages, and to admire unique buildings and tower compositions. Estonian culture is best understood through visiting various striking museums or art galleries, and tasting traditional dishes.

How to travel?

Flights to Estonia are not only cheap, but also very quick: if you plan your trip beforehand, you can find plane tickets for only 29 Eur and fly to Tallinn in roughly an hour’s time. The international Tallinn airport is located just 4 kilometres away from the city centre, which can be reached simply and easily. The city of Tallinn offers subway and trolleys, as well as a very well-developed bus system. Choose it to visit any Tallinn location fast and comfortably.

What to taste?

Estonian cuisine simply cannot exist without dark bread, which in time has become a vital part of Estonian culture. There are plenty of various traditions, superstitions, and sayings about dark bread, and you should definitely remember to taste this homemade delicacy yourself. While visiting Tallinn, try some so called “blood sausages” (verivorst), which are a traditional Estonian Christmas dish, usually served with cranberry jam, butter or sour cream. Also make sure to try a dish that is made by the ancient Estonian kama recipe, used for making various desserts (kama is a flour mix from different kinds of grain).

What to see?

Tallinn has the most preserved medieval architecture in Northern Europe. Therefore, you should try and check out every corner of Tallinn, while you’re visiting. We recommend paying a visit to the gothic Tallinn city hall and St. Olaf’s church that was once the highest church in Europe. Also worth seeing are the Parliament palace, the Alexander Nevsky cathedral on top of the Toompea hill, and one of the oldest Tallinn churches, the 14th century Church of the Holy Ghost, which also has the oldest city clock.

What to do?

Tallinn has plenty of interesting museums, and we recommend visiting at least some of them, particularly, the Estonian Art museum, which once was in Peter I’s palace, and the classic and contemporary art museum of Kumu. A great impression will be formed after paying a visit to the Estonian Maritime museum and its Seaplane harbour sector, full of exciting simulators. We also recommend taking a stroll across Tallinn’s Botanical garden, going to see the television tower, and observing the city from Kohtu platform that offers an astonishing panoramic view. If you’re staying for a few days longer, why not head over 50 kilometres west from Tallinn, in order to see the striking Keila waterfall.
