Useful advice for travelling to Belarus (BY)

Flights to Belarus, the neighbour country of Lithuania, are a quick and easy way to see many similarities in traditions and customs between the two countries, as well as some apparent differences. Dedicate some time to prepare for your journey, and you will be able to enjoy wonderful nature, beaches, and architecture.

Preparing for the trip

When going to Belarus, there are no compulsory vaccinations required. You could, however, choose to get re-vaccinated against tetanus, diphtheria, and hepatitis A and B as a precaution, as well as take care of health insurance in case you’re planning to indulge in some active tourism.

Before going, you will need to acquire a travel visa. It will be issued in about 30 days or less. You will save some time if you fill out an application before heading to the embassy.

Transportation and travel charges

The best way to get better acquainted with Belarus is to use trains. Railway tracks connect many Belarusian cities, but you can also choose bus, subway, metro, and taxi services. Public transport costs are low; however, most of the roads are old and uneven here.

You can pay for your purchases using the official local currency, Belarusian rubles (BYR). One ruble is worth approximately 0.0004; be prepared to get a thick batch of banknotes in the currency exchange office. Living costs in Belarus are lower than in Lithuania. For example, you can order a cup of cappuccino for about 30 260 rubles and have lunch in a cheap restaurant for 157 433 rubles. In local shops, a 1.5 litre water bottle will cost you 11 258 rubles; you can buy one kilogram of rice for about 18 189 rubles, and one kilogram of chicken breast for roughly 66 489 rubles. Public transport tickets cost about 5 000 rubles, and a one kilometre long taxi ride will cost you about 6 795 rubles.

Additional information:

  • Official languages of the country are Belarusian and Russian. You should know a few words of the latter, as only few Belarus locals understand English. You may also be able to communicate in Polish in some areas of the country.
  • Distance between Vilnius and Belarus’ capital city Minsk amounts to just 106 kilometres.
  • Belarus uses the UTC +2 time zone and switches to UTC +3 at summer.
  • Best return gifts choices

Belarusian souvenirs are somewhat similar to Lithuanian and Russian ones. Authentic souvenirs are a sure way to capture precious moments of your visit to Belarus. We recommend making a purchase of wooden matryoshka dolls, and woven baskets, vases, and Christmas decorations, as well as linen tablecloths, towels, rugs, and clothes.

It’s easy to plan for a trip to Belarus, as there are frequent flights available. This is a great holiday choice for a weekend or week-long trips that you will pleasantly spend with your family, friends, or colleagues.
