Useful advice for travelling to Azerbaijan (AZE)

Flying to Azerbaijan is a great holiday destination choice that allows visiting exotic Asian cities and soaking one’s feet in the Caspian Sea waves. The trip is a lengthy one, but all arriving travellers are welcomed by honest, friendly, and hospitable Azerbaijan locals. Make sure to fully prepare for this enviable trip, and there will be nothing to worry about.

Preparing for the trip

Before flying out, you should get re-vaccinated against tetanus and diphtheria. It is recommended to insure your health, and you should also get vaccinated against malaria in the cases when your holiday trip is planned for the period between June and October. There is a light risk of getting infected with hepatitis A and B in Azerbaijan.

Lithuanian travellers require a visa that is issued in 16 days time. You can obtain your travel visa in travel agencies or in the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in Vilnius. Such visa is valid for up to 30 days.

Transportation and travel charges

Azerbaijani roads are old, curvy, and barely paved. Public transport vehicles have not been renewed for a long time as well. Nevertheless, bus and train trips are cheaper and more comfortable than those using your own car.

You can pay for your purchases using the official Azerbaijani currency, manats (AZN). One manat is equal to approximately 0.889 euro. Living costs in Azerbaijan are lower than in Lithuania. For example, you can order a cup of cappuccino for about 3.90 and have lunch in a cheap restaurant for 7 manats. In local shops, a 1.5 litre water bottle will cost you 50 qəpiks; you can buy one kilogram of rice for about 1.60, and one kilogram of chicken breast for roughly 4.40 manat. Public transport tickets cost about 20 manats, and a one kilometre long taxi ride will cost you about 70 qəpiks.

Additional information:

  • Official local language is Azerbaijani. However, you can also communicate in English and Russian in some areas.
  • Distance between Vilnius and Azerbaijan’s capital city Baku amounts to almost 1500 kilometres.
  • The country uses the UTC +4 time zone. At summer, it is changed to UTC +5.
  • Best return gifts choices

Clothing and accessories made from silk, warm scarves, and handy canvas bags will pleasantly surprise your friends and loved ones who value practicality. Porcelain statues and tableware also make great return gifts ideas. Those who like luxury will particularly enjoy natural caviar, precious stones, jewellery, and cosmetic products made using ancient recipes.

Natural reserves, mud volcanoes, mountains, caves with pre-historic paintings, sandy sea shores, and gold-shimmering modern cities are undoubtedly all sights worth seeing in Azerbaijan. Purchase your tickets and make sure to acquire a visa, and your holiday adventure will begin.
