Useful advice for travelling to Zimbabwe (ZM)

Ancient Zimbabwean culture and powerful nature forces are things that no economical or political difficulties are able to change. Flying to Zimbabwe is a perfect holiday choice that allows reaching the country safely, quickly and comfortably. You should make all necessary preparations and take standard safety measures, before you begin your joyous African adventure.

Preparing for the trip

Lithuanian tourists must obtain a travel visa to enter Zimbabwe. This visa will allow travellers to stay up to 30 days in the country and will be issued in approximately 2 weeks time. However, because of difficult political situation of Zimbabwe, this period may need to be extended.

All tourists older than 9 months, arriving through territories infected with yellow fever, need to provide a corresponding vaccination certificate. Depending on the area of your visits, there is a risk of getting infected with malaria, hepatitis A and B, typhoid fever, diphtheria, and tetanus in Zimbabwe. We recommend insuring your health before the trip.

Transportation and travel charges

Most of Zimbabwean roads are of very poor quality and not lit at night. Public transport (buses, trains) often deviate from a planned route. Nevertheless, these are safer than driving a car. Another travel choice is taxis, but you should avoid using their services at night.

Official Zimbabwean currency is no longer used and you can instead pay for your purchases using other countries’ currency; such as: USD dollars, euros, Great Britain’s pound sterlings, South African rands, and other. In Zimbabwe, you can order a cup of cappuccino for about 2.30 USD dollars euro and have lunch in a cheap restaurant for 8.7 dollars. In local shops, a 1.5 litre water bottle will cost you 1.50 dollars; you can buy one kilogram of rice for about 1.90 dollars, and one kilogram of chicken breast for roughly 5 dollars. Public transport tickets cost about 0.50 dollar, and a one kilometre long taxi ride will cost you 1 dollar.

Additional information:

  • Official Zimbabwe languages are many, including English, Ndebele, and Shona.
  • Distance between Vilnius and Zimbabwe’s capital city Harare amounts to 5 016 kilometres.
  • Zimbabwe uses the UTC +2 time zone.
  • Best return gifts choices

Authentic tribal masks and clay dishes or materials, decorated with symmetrical patterns, are interesting and unique return gift choices. You will also pleasantly surprise your loved ones if you purchase some stone statuettes, totems, silk clothes and accessories, as well as jewellery with precious stones.

Every passionate traveller must buy some return gifts and souvenirs. This is also an excellent way of helping Zimbabwe locals financially. After making a souvenir purchase or immersing yourself in a nature trip, you will receive gratitude from locals in the form of their honest smiles and immeasurable hospitality.
