Useful advice for travelling to Tuvalu (TUV)

True lovers of everything exotic will be highly pleased with a journey to Tuvalu, where it is possible to forget all day-to-day cares and problems. If you have never before heard about this Pacific Ocean island country, you should definitely consider getting closer acquainted with it. This Polynesian island nation consists of eight coral reef atolls that locals call islands.

Preparing for the trip

There are also no compulsory vaccination requirements for entering Tuvalu, formerly known as the Ellice Islands. However, it is still recommended to get vaccinated against hepatitis A and B, typhoid fever, and tetanus as a precaution.

There is no need to make any special preparations before your journey to Tuvalu, but you should however look for information about current weather conditions. Tropical climate of the island country makes both locals and country guests happy, as it ensures that the temperature is 27 to 30 °C all year long. Rainfall is most likely to dominate the time period from October to March; hurricanes are also sometimes possible during this time.

Transportation and travel charges

Tuvalu islands’ roads are short and few. Capital city of Funafuti has approximately 20 kilometres worth of coral-affected roads that are used by several tens of local car drivers. All Tuvalu islands use one single ferry. Most probably, you will not require taxi services in this archipelago country, and a boat will suffice for your inter-island journeys.

The official currency is the Tuvaluan dollar (TVD). One euro is equal to approximately 1.50 Tuvaluan dollar. Living costs in Tuvalu are similar to those of other Pacific Ocean island nations. In local shops, a 1.5 litre water bottle will cost you one euro, and you can buy a kilogram of chicken for up to 6 euros. Twelve eggs will cost you about 3 euros, while you will need to pay approximately 1.65 for a litre of milk. You can order a meal in a cheap restaurant for 4 euros.

Additional information:

  • The country belongs to the UTC+12 time zone, and no summer time changes are applied in Tuvalu.
  • Official languages are English and Tuvaluan.
  • Distance from Vilnius to Tuvalu’s capital Funafuti amounts to approximately 14 390 kilometres.
  • Best return gifts choices

Your friends and loved ones will be pleased with a gift of traditional Tuvaluan musical instruments; percussion is the most popular choice. Postal stamp collectors will love to ad Tuvaluan stamps to their collection. Most interestingly, this is also one of the main sources of economy in the island country. Traditional colourful scarves and artificial flower crowns will also make great return gifts bringing along the memory of Tuvaluan dancers.
