City of rich people, art, and oddities – Zurich
Meticulous tidiness, businessmen in suits, medieval buildings – this is one side of Zurich. However, right beside a corner, you could find an entirely different look on Zurich’s face. The city is full of interest-grabbing and conflicting feelings inducing museums and entertainment options. Cheap flights to Zurich give a great opportunity to see every quirk of the city, as well as its sightseeing objects that attract so many tourists.
How to travel?
Zurich is easiest to reach by landing in the International Kloten airport and afterwards riding a train or metro. Metros are the pride of Switzerland’s capital. We recommend travelling at least once to admire a neat, vintage looking metro car. It’s also convenient to travel by bus. However, prices of public transportation are high, and you should take care to purchase a city card beforehand.
What to taste?
Switzerland is the country that gave a start to the world-wide obsession with cheese. The exquisite tastes of fondue and raclette are great examples of why that is. While visiting Zurich, try yet another Swiss food discovery, cornflakes with fruit, for breakfast.
For dinner we recommend tasting some veal in sour cream or wine sauce, or some wild game steaks. If you’re looking for something lighter to eat, choose dumplings or potato quiches. While on the street, try some local hot-dogs. Traditional meals will taste great paired with beer or cold tea. For those with a sweet tooth, we recommend trying out the Swiss chocolate, and pumpkin or pear pie.
What to see?
Begin your acquaintance with Zurich in the cosy and inspiring old town. Here you will see the hall town and the Big Cathedral, or the Grossmunster, with its twin towers. The old town also hides the oldest in the city, St. Peter’s Church, decorated with a huge clock. After going all the way up the nearby Lindenhof hill, prepare to be swept away by the beauty of the view.
Unforgettable impressions of Lake Zurich are also a guarantee. When street lights start shimmering in the evening, the lake becomes simply magical. By its shore you will find a traditional Chinese garden, which is one of the charming oddities of the city. If art interests you, you will be happy to delve into a whirlpool of museums. Why not visit the Clock and Watch Museum, the Tram Museum, or the part of the city called “Cabaret Voltaire”.
What to do?
Zurich exudes calm and tidiness; however, behind the neat facade you can find the cradle of Dadaist and Avant-garde movements, as well as the Contemporary Art Centre of ecologic arts. If you do not find the human body frightening, pay a visit to the Moulage Museum, and you’ll surely have some long-lasting impressions afterwards. You can go just outside the city to ride on a Swiss cow, if you feel like you have some excess energy in you. While staying in the city, you can also go to an ecological nightclub, where the electrical energy is produced by the stamping and dancing of the club visitors. If you manage to stay open-minded, the flight to Zurich may even inspire you personally to create some weird and beautiful masterpieces as well.
