Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, I’m coming mañana!

Las Palmas is the capital of the sunny Spanish Gran Canaria Island. If you’re tired from all the pouring rain and you miss sun warmth, visit Las Palmas surrounded by the waves of the ocean! At daytime, you can sunbathe and admire intricate architecture and exotic nature. Spend a relaxing holiday in Las Palmas, enjoy the siestas alongside city locals, and learn to do everything mañana.

How to travel?

The island is located more than 5000 kilometres away from Lithuania, which means that you will need to be patient while flying on a plane. The images that you will see just after arriving to Las Palmas airport will help you quickly forget any negative thoughts about the long trip. The island is not very big, and you can comfortably use a car for inner travels. You can choose a car for renting beforehand, while still in Lithuania, or you can get one at the airport.

What to taste?

The Canary Islands cuisine is full of traditional Spanish, African and South American recipes. This means you will able to taste seafood dishes in every restaurant. You simply must taste Gofio, which is stone-hand-mill-ground flour, made from roasted grains: wheat, maize, or barley. This flour is later on used to make porridge, sweet pudding, bread, and even gofio ice cream. Also try some Ron Miel honey rum beloved by the locals. The sweet and tasty Malvasia wine will be a perfect return gift.

What to see?

It’s important to remember to visit the old town of Las Palmas. Its narrow cobblestone streets will instantly transport you to the 15th century. While walking down the old town, you should pay a closer visit to the Santa Ana Square and visit the cathedral by the same name. From atop the cathedral, a breathtaking panoramic view of the island can be seen. Right in the heart of old town, there is Casa de Colón (Christopher Columbus House), where the famous traveller had once been staying. There you will also find a museum dedicated to the man. The neighbourhood of Triana is known for its traditional Gran Canarian architecture, and it also offers many shops and restaurants. You can indulge in catching sunrays at the gorgeous Playa de las Canteras beach. If you have never seen and wish to view almond trees blossoming, plan your trip to Las Palmas in March.

What to do?

While on holiday in Las Palmas, you will want to see as much as possible. If you wish to gather unforgettable memories from your time spent here, make sure to arrive to the island at the time of the Lithuanian Užgavėnės. You will then be able to join the Carnival of Las Palmas, which gathers big crowds of tourists and continues 2 to 3 weeks.
