Bucharest: a majestic park of Romanian history

High and sturdy medieval churches, Soviet apartment blocks, and ultramodern glass buildings are all combined in the city of Bucharest, becoming a smooth and harmonious sum of vastly differing parts. Romanian capital city looks like a huge museum, able to present its visitors with an authentic reflection of Romanian everyday life.

How to travel?

Cheap flights to Bucharest reach their finish at the international Henri Coanda airport, located 17 kilometres away from the city centre. We recommend covering that distance by using a comfortable bus or taxi. Tourist attraction points can all be reached on foot, using previously mentioned modes of transport, as well as trolleybuses or metro.

What to taste?

Romanian cuisine is full of high-calorie, filling but undoubtedly delicious dishes. One of the most famous ones is chiftele, or meat balls in tomato sauce, which can be found in many local restaurants. No less popular is the dish of ground lamb, beef, or bacon rolls, called mititei. We also recommend trying some bell peppers stuffed with meat (ardei umpluti), cabbage leaves with filling (sarmale), and grilled marinated fish (saramura).

If you like sweets, indulge in some sourdough pastries with fillings (cozonac), curd rings, and baklava (filo pastries with hazelnuts and sweet syrup). Definitely have a taste of amazing Romanian wine, plum brandy tuica, and alcoholic drink from elderflowers, called socata.

What to see?

One of the most striking Bucharest buildings is the world’s second largest Parliament palace. No less impressive and awe-inspiring are the Palace of the Patriarchate, Arcul de Triumf (the Triumphal Arch), Peleș Castle, Victory Square, and Revolution Square.

Ethereal city aura is best felt in the old town of Bucharest. Here you will see buildings that look striking both inside and outside: the Crețulescu Palace, and St. Nicholas Students' Church with university. Just nearby, the neo-classical Romanian Bank building can also be observed.

Many interesting facts and objects can be known and seen by visiting the National Museum of Romanian History, as well as the Museums of the Romanian Peasant and the Romanian Literature, where ancient history meets Soviet heritage. You could also visit the Jewish History Museum and Bucharest’s cemetery.

What to do?

If you want to admire the beauty of Romanian nature, head over to visit the Cismigiu gardens. In the summer, you can take a swim in a boat in the gardens’ lake, and in the winter, you can always skte on top of it, now frozen solid. The gardens offer a closer look at some of the more rare and foreign plants. It is also a location of several important monuments. Also worth paying a visit, are the Botanical garden and the parks of Carol and Herastrau.

Bucharest is also a place of various cultural events: the International Opera festival, the Old Bucharest festival, and the Chinese New Year Celebration festival. After you take a part in these festivities, you will feel completely immersed into the cultural waters of the welcoming, cosy and unique Romanian capital city of Bucharest.
