Eindhoven – a gate to the future

If Eindhoven had a business card, it would probably depict some brightly lit sci-fi-like buildings, controversial-looking art pieces, and bars overflowing with people. The city in the south of the Netherlands really does look like a futuristic one, just how people from the previous century could have imagined it. A weekend trip to Eindhoven is a perfect opportunity to view the European harvest crops for technology and design.

How to travel?

Cheap flights to Eindhoven reach their finish at the Eindhoven international airport, which is located 8 kilometres away from the city centre. The distance can be overcome by a special bus, or you could choose to travel using a taxi or renting a car. We recommend buses and bikes for any inner-city travels. You can always choose to go on foot while visiting local sightseeing locations.

What to taste?

If you want to have some delicious, filling food, you should head over to the part of the city called Het Stratumseind. Here you will find plenty of wonderful restaurants and cafés. Many of them, however, require an advance reservation.

At the restaurant, make sure to try out some of the best Dutch dishes: pureed vegetable soup with sausage (stamppoten), French fries with mayonnaise (vlaamse frites), tomato soup, spicy meatballs (gehaktballen), potato croquettes, and cow cabbage with sausage (boerenkool met worst).

Eindhoven is very proud of its monks’ beer making recipe that is still to this day used for brewing amazing beer. You can find your best refreshment from plenty of local light and dark beer sorts choices.

What to see?

City centre beckons with its numerous futuristic buildings. You can start your trip at the Van Abbemuseum Art museum, where you can see many famous modernist works. Definitely go and see the flying-saucer-like exterior of the former science and technology museum Evoluon.

Pay a visit to the industrial-style White dame, which houses Eindhoven’s library and design academy. Worth paying attention, is the strange De Blob building that acts as a gateway to the De Admirant shopping centre. Also amazing are the older city buildings: majestic neo-gothic St. Catherine Church, gothic St. Peter’s Church tower, and Philips incandescent Lamp factory-museum.

What to do?

If you’re interested in automobiles, definitely check out the DAF Museum. The power of technology can be clearly observed in the Light Art centre or by visiting one of the Facade festivals. Eindhoven beckons thousands of guests every September, with a 22-kilometre-road of light ornaments is lit up. Another interesting event is the GLOW festival, casting the city in laser lights and creating an unbelievable view and experience such surreal that you won’t want to come back to reality.
