Valetta: the smallest and most impressive European Union capital

In the arms of the Mediterranean Sea, there lies Malta, with its rich history. At its heart, there is Valetta, a city that has been guarded as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO from 1980. The smallest capital city in Europe is like a shell, having collected in it hundreds of sand grains in the form of cultural and historical monuments. Under the constant hot sun, these are becoming hard and they make up the foundation for an unforgettable romantic or family holiday trip.

How to travel?

Valetta can be reached by a plane, after landing in the international Malta airport. From there you will need to cross an 8 kilometre distance to reach the city centre. You can do that by taking a comfortable bus, getting a taxi, or renting a car. These means of transportation are recommended for inner city travels as well, but you can visit all the sightseeing objects on foot.

What to taste?

Valetta restaurants offer some of the very best Mediterranean dishes. They usually consist of high-calorie yet irresistible meals that will make every gourmet happy. Local cuisine has been largely determined by the history of the island (knights from different lands used to bring various culinary traditions with them), as well as poverty of the locals.

While on holiday in Malta’s capital, you should definitely try some Widow soup (Soppa ta'l–armla). We also recommend trying the famous rabbit stew (Stuffat Tal–Fenek), fish pie Lampuki, and fish soup (Aljotta). These dishes are truly great paired with some exquisite local wine and refreshing beer.

For dessert, order some pastries with ricotta (Kannoli) or sweet date-palms (Mqaret), and some Helwa tat–Tork, which is a sweet mixture of crushed and whole almonds. You can snack on some broad been dip with garlic (Bigilla) or try the local Pastizzi phyllo pastries.

What to see?

Valetta is home for about 300 churches, museums, squares, palaces, and other sightseeing objects. We recommend going to see at least some of them. Especially worth your attention are the church of Our Lady of Victories and St. John's Co-Cathedral, which contains the remains of the city founder. Just nearby, you can find a museum that preserves the city’s medieval heritage.

Visit the Magisterial palace that houses Malta’s parliament, Fort Saint Elmo, unique toy Musuem, and Auberge de Castille situated at the highest point of Valetta. You should also pay a visit to the wonderful Barakka and Hastings gardens.

What to do?

Diving, sailing, parachuting, horseback riding, golf, and tennis games are all just some of active leisure possibilities in Valetta. If you wish to admire local culture, head over to popular events and theatre shows. Tired from all the experiences? Head straight for the idyllic beaches and indulge in great weather and relaxing SPA procedures. These will show you that Valetta has earned the title of the best resort for valid reason.
