Miniature Lithuania – the city of Vilnius

Capital cities often reflect the best qualities of the countries. Vilnius is no exception. The biggest Lithuanian city lets you explore its romantic old town streets and alleys, and all the while you can admire nature’s changing scenery and even indulge in some tasty meals. Vilnius is not the only place in the country with Lithuanian cultural monuments, but it is an ideal starting point for an exploratory and fun journey.

How to travel?

Cheap and comfy flights to Vilnius reach their finish in the international Vilnius airport. The distance to the city centre is only 5 kilometres, and you can cross it using a bus, a taxi, or a special train.

Vilnius city also has a trolleybus network. All means of public transportation are modern and have low ticket prices. However, if you want to economize even more, you could purchase a city card beforehand and store a desired amount of money for future trips.

What to taste?

If you want to try the most delicious Lithuanian dishes, you have found a perfect place to do it. There are plenty of restaurants representing the best parts of Lithuanian cuisine in the city. Here you can find steaming and fragrant Lithuanian zeppelins, which are big grated potato dumplings stuffed with meat and served with crispy bacon greaves. You should also try some grated potato pie with smoked pig ears, curd cheese, sour cream butter, and other dishes so beloved by the locals.

You can quench your thirst with a helping of kvass, sap drink, or flavourful herb tea. In the warm seasons, you could also taste some apple juice, or fruit and berries kompot.

What to see?

Vilnius city symbols are known around the globe. Vilnius TV Tower is one of the highest buildings in East Europe, and the Baroque St. Peter and St. Paul's Church is called one of the most beautiful churches of the world.

Also worth visiting are the Town Hall square and the nearby Vilnius Cathedral, which is the most important Lithuanian church. Not too far away you can find the hill with the majestic Gediminas’ Tower, as well as the Gothic ensemble of two churches: St. Anne’s, alongside with the St. Francis and St. Bernard church. Interesting and definitely worth paying attention is the district of Užupis: the republic inside of a republic.

Vilnius is very proud of its Museum-Gallery of Amber, or Lithuania’s gold, as well as the Alexander Pushkin Literary Museum, and the M. K. Ciurlionis House. You can admire local culture in the National Lithuanian Art Museum, the National Philharmonic, and the National Opera and Ballet Theatre of Lithuania.

What to do?

Verkiai Regional Park, Kalnai Park, Pūčkoriai Exposure, and Belmontas dam are all places in Vilnius that are simply perfect for active leisure, allowing for admiring the charms of nature’s beauty. We also recommend taking a walk across the Vilnius University Botanical Gardens in Kairėnai or visiting the Rokantiškės Exposure.

You can find authentic articles for return gifts during the time of Kaziukas’ Fair activities or while wandering through Tymas Market. You can always find new and surprising places to gather fond memories from. Vilnius is not a small city, and it hides many secrets – not only of itself, but about the whole of Lithuania too – between its narrows alleys and palace ruins.
