Indian Hollywood – Mumbai

Mumbai is sometimes called a particularly rich city, as it has everything: horrible slums and sumptuous skyscrapers, litter-filled alleys and striking architectural objects. The city is a perfect visiting place for the brave and the lovers of challenges, as well as for everyone who is looking to take a closer look at Indian exotica and contrasts that are new to Europeans.

How to travel?

India is easy to reach by taking a connecting flight with a single plane change. In order to reach city centre from any Mumbai airport, you will need to use local transport system, usually consisting of buses, metro, or rickshaws. Such transport is usually very full, as much more people live in Mumbai than in most European cities. If you’re looking for comfort, you should choose a taxi or a rented car instead.

What to taste?

Before looking where to eat, you should prepare yourself for unusual images. For example, Indians usually prepare their food right on the street in the open air, at the same table that is also used for storing ingredients. This is a common way of doing things in India, and tourists see it as yet another symbol of local culture.

Mumbai cooks will offer travellers from all over the globe unusual but tasty and spicy veal stew along with strong and relaxing Indian rum, which is prepared both in restaurants and at home.

What to see?

One of the most important Mumbai objects is the gate that recalls an important past event. Such gate, through which the last British soldiers once left, is definitely worth visiting. After doing this, you should not seek Western looking skyscrapers but instead head over to see the largest slum in Asia, Dharavi, and its entire crowds full of homeless people, the children beggars, and the afflicted. In the same slum, you will also find the largest open air laundry, where thousands of locals are busy every day. What you will see here will stay with you for a long time, and after you feel what the true taste of India is, you will want to come back again and again.

What to do?

Mumbai is often called the Indian Hollywood, or Bollywood. Every Mumbai visitor must visit the local cinema theatre and experience the reason behind such title. Local films are over-packed with action and unreal special effects but are still appreciated and loved by Indians. Be aware that the national Indian anthem is played before every such film showing and be prepared to respectfully join everyone in the cinema getting to their feet.
