A trip to Reykjavík: Scandinavian peacefulness with American flavour

Iceland is a small but truly intriguing and unique island. Therefore, a trip to Reykjavik will be one to remember. Every traveller is beckoned here by the peculiar Scandinavian calm, southern Iceland positivity, and American culture’s reflections that can be seen everywhere in the island. Most impressively, Iceland’s landscape is breathtaking, and it reminds you again and again that you’ve come to the land of fire and ice.

How to travel?

Although Reykjavik is the main city-port in the country, here you will also find the international airport, which helps travellers to easily reach the capital. Then, to go from the airport to any place in Reykjavik, you can choose public transport or taxi services. The city is really small, and you will be able to make short trips around it on foot. However, if you want a more detailed trip across the capital, better rent a car.

What to taste?

What should you taste in this city of an American spirit? First, we recommend trying some amazing local hamburgers and hotdogs. Hamburgers can be served with usual potato chips or with a special Icelandic batch of potatoes (fried unpeeled) and the locals’ beloved mayonnaise-ketchup sauce. Hotdogs are usually made using lamb sausages and sweet baked onion chips that add a unique flavour to the meal.

Naturally, Icelanders have some authentic dishes as well. In order to try those, the locals will offer you some traditional lamb and vegetable soup, as well as some twice smoked or cooked and smoked lamb. For dessert, try some local delicacies like brown crepes with whipped, slightly salty, cream, or cocoa with salt.

What to see?

The Sun Voyager (Solfar) sculpture has more or less become the calling card for Reykjavik: it’s a huge steel Viking ship that is guarding the old harbour day after day. After taking a picture here, you should visit the Volcano house, where you will get a close look at the real Iceland. Here, you will be able to enjoy a documentary film about many biggest volcano eruptions that have happened, and you will also see some petrified volcano lava samples, various minerals and stones. You will be able to hear some real and authentic related stories, too.

What to do?

For those who are looking for rest and relaxation, the Laugardalur park is perfect, as here, in a place called “The valley of hot streams”, you will find a wide thermal pool, an intriguing botanical garden, and a family zoo with various Icelandic animals. Animal lovers will get yet another treat here, as they will be able to rent an Icelandic horse and take a part in horse-back tours, observing a new and different layer of Iceland’s capital city.
