The island of Rhodes is more than a great place for spending lazy afternoons on beaches covered with sand or pebbles. Here, you will also be able to enjoy active water entertainment and get a closer sense of Middle Ages reaching architecture, telling a tale of impressive history of the island. How to travel?Flights to Rhodes are rather cheap, but it mainly depends on the flight date and air company of your choosing. The main season begins in May and continues up to October, but those who the heat of summer should wait at least until it is June. That’s when the temperature in Rhodes reaches 27 degrees above zero. Rhodes island airport is located about 14 kilometres away from the capital city, but Rhodes city and other local towns can be easily reached by bus. The entirety island of Rhodes has good bus service. However, bus tickets are not too cheap, and reach from 2 to 5 Euros or more. The best way to travel across the island is probably renting a car, as this will leave you with much more free time to wander around. Probably the best transport choice in the evening is getting a taxi. However, we recommend trying to bargain with the drivers who often will not turn the taximeters on. What to taste? One of the most popular local Rhodes dishes is moussaka, a layered baked dish made from minced meat, aubergines, and other vegetables. Another highly popular local dish is based on vine leaves stuffed with minced meat and rice (ntolmadakia). While visiting Rhodes, we also recommend trying some fresh seafood and fish, as well as ordering some delicious Greek coffee. Here, you will be able to see the 14th century Grand Magister palace, Mandraki harbour forts and sculptures, as well as the ruins of antique Acropolis of Rhodes and those of the marble Odeon theatre. Take some time to admire the beaches of Lindos city and its acropolis, as well as the Valley of Butterflies and the byzantine Moni Tsambika church of Our Lady.
