Kos – a true oasis of greenery on water

Greek island of Kos is a favourite holiday choice of many Lithuanians for a long time now. Kos surprises its guests with unbelievably beautiful bright green plains. That is why the island is sometimes called the swimming garden by tourists. Kos is a perfect relaxing holiday destination point for everyone looking to see beautiful sights.

How to travel?

Kos town can be reached from the airport that welcomes planes from the entire world. The airport is located about 22 kilometres away from the town, and this distance can be crossed in just 15 minutes, by taxi, a bus, or a rented car. Further adventures are, however, best planned with bikes, mopeds, or four-wheeled motorcycles. While visiting Kos, you should definitely try out water transport as well: ferries, ships with underwater wings or little sailing ships that are especially popular on the island.

What to taste?

Kos cuisine consists of many different tastes; therefore, many people will find something for themselves among numerous dishes offered. You simply must try Kos wine, made from locally grown grapes, or the particularly popular unique sort of brown cheese. It will be even tastier, served along with local olives and the famous tzatziki sauce, which is made from natural yogurt, garlic, cucumber, and peculiar spices. We also recommend trying some lasagne, cooked in meat broth (pittaridia), cooked raisins with spices (kousafi), and cheesecake with honey and cinnamon, or katimeria. If you wish for something stronger to drink, Kos locals will offer you various kinds of liquors and the famous Greek anise-flavoured vodka, well-known and beloved among every Greek islands tourist.

What to see?

After arriving to Kos, you will see many small, cosy and neat looking churches that can only be entered using a small key found on an outer wall. This lovely ritual is only a beginning, as upon entering, you can choose to light a candle, eat some sweets, and view the ancient icons of the saints. After doing this, head over to the city port, where you can find a striking medieval castle and visit the Archaeology museum of Kos.

What to do?

After having paid a visit to all the city’s architectural objects, head over to the central agora for shopping, or take a long walk across many narrow alleys of Kos’s old town. Finally, many travellers also wish to visit the hot streams, found just outside Kos town, for and healthy rest in bubbling baths, all the while admiring gorgeous mountain landscape.
