City of strong traditions and happiness – the lively Tbilisi

Georgia is a country full of unearthly beauty, surprises, and contrasts. Curious tourists from all over the globe are beckoned here by Tbilisi: the big capital city that has been taken down and built up again almost 30 times. Each city guest will find a breathtaking landscape, unbelievable intimacy, fiery temperament of the locals, divine food, and impressive buildings.

How to travel?

All planes that come here land in Tbilisi International Airport. The distance to the city centre is several kilometres, which can be easily covered by bus or by train. Cheapest means of transportation inside the city itself are metro, buses and minibuses. If you purchase a “Metromoney” card, you will be able to travel much easier.

What to taste?

Most travellers associate Georgia with strong, fragrant wine and fantastically delicious lamb shashlik. We recommend tasting these dishes, and more, while you’re in Tbilisi – have a tasty adventure.

Please your taste buds with some cheese stuffed mushrooms baked in a clay pot, some kharcho soup, chicken grilled in butter, aubergines stuffed with nuts, and khinkalis. Don’t forget to try some of the famous khachapuri cheese bread and flavour your meet dishes with some spicy ajika. Pair these appetizing dishes with dense local red wine.

What to see?

Begin your acquaintance with beauties of Tbilisi from the breathtaking panoramic view of the city, which can be reached by going up the hill of the Narikala fortress. We recommend viewing the city from above when it gets dark: the river will seem like a magical creature surrounded by joyful lights.

While travelling along the main city street, Rustaveli Avenue, you’ll notice many buildings of fairytale-like beauty. Wooden architecture of old town will also leave a lasting impression. Here you will easily find the oldest church – the Anchiskhati Basilica.

Close by you’ll be able to see the monument of Mother of Kartli – she holds a bowl of wine for the friends and a sword for the enemies. If you love history artefacts, pay a visit to Tbilisi museums of History, Fine Arts, and the National Gallery. You will find some peace and quiet in the National Botanical Gardens.

What to do?

Tbilisi offers more than majestic monuments. The real Georgian temperaments can be felt while resting in the underground sulphur baths, wandering around antique markets, or observing energetic folk dances. It’s worth it to pay a visit to cinema festivals as well.

If you feel like you need something more extreme, why not plan a trip to the mountains and canyons, a stallion ride, or a rafting adventure in torrential mountain rivers. These activities will also show you how Georgians always manage to stay in high spirits, whatever happens, and know how to cherish each and every day. This is one of the most precious lessons Tbilisi can grant you.
