The colourful city of merchants and bikes: Copenhagen

Originally established as a merchant town, today Copenhagen amazes the world with its large numbers of bikes, cosy colourful little houses, and unique museums. While taking a walk through this port-city, in the corner of an eye one will notice some characters from H. K. Andersen’s fairy tales. The capital of Denmark truly is fairylike, and each and every street whispers about it.

How to travel?

The main airport welcoming passengers from flights to Copenhagen is close to Kastrup. The port-city can be reached by bus, metro, or train. Less popular airport is located in Roskilde.

Denmark’s capital offers comfortable inner travels by metro or buses. The most economical and ecological choice would be bikes, and there are plenty of rental points, as well as special cycling paths, in the city. You can also economize by purchasing a city card, because with it you will be able to enter most of the museums for free or at a discount.

What to taste?

Denmark is a country that loves potatoes, pork, and bread. It shows in menus of Copenhagen: you should definitely try some smorrebrod – traditional local sandwiches that are most often prepared with pâté or salami.

We recommend choosing some cooked cod, roasted duck, or cured pork for dinner. Lovers of sweets delicacies will enjoy tasting sweet soups with fruits or berries, apple pie, almond pastries, and hot chocolate. Excellent local beer or tea will help quenching your thirst afterwards. Alcoholic drinks are best paired up with some beloved Danish cheese; you will not be disappointed.

What to see?

A great place to start your acquaintance with the city is the fabulous panoramic view from the bell tower of the city hall. Afterwards, you could go down the 2 kilometres long Stroget Street, which then opens up into a local marketplace, and in the meantime don’t forget to give a look to all the shiny shop windows.

The sensation of luxury will follow you all the way to the renaissance Rosenborg Castle. Here you can catch sight of several chambers. Also majestic is the Amalienborg palace, home of the Danish royal family. However, the true spirit of Copenhagen lies next to the famous statue “The Little Mermaid”, and alongside numerous picturesque houses in New Port. You should also pay a visit to the open-air museum, Frilandmusset. Its exhibits will transport you to the striking past of Scandinavia.

What to do?

Copenhagen offers entertainment opportunities for everyone, from children to seniors. One perfect place that proves it is the Tivoli Gardens, created and decorated in accordance with fairytale motifs. It’s also worth visiting the oldest amusement park in the world, Bakken, location of which is outside the city. We recommend choosing the Round Tower to admire Scandinavian sky from. Meanwhile, the vast National Aquarium is the perfect place to observe aquatic life from around the globe. Danish people are often called the happiest nation in the world. Find happiness in travelling to the place of fabulous beauty perpetuated in architecture and museums.

Mielas, nedidelis ir jaukus senamiestis, smagus pasiplaukiojimas ekskursijoje laivu, maistas ir gėrimai - nieko išskirtinio, tik aišku kainų lygis kiek kitoks :)
