Travelling to the familiar yet surprising Minsk

Every Lithuanian traveller should visit Minsk at least once. Neighbour country capital city has very familiar history; however the city still has its surprises. Minsk has one of the strangest buildings in the world, and the city also has a general aura of an unbeatable hero to it. A weekend trip is an ideal choice for getting acquainted with local culture, as well as for finding some entertainment.

How to travel?

Minsk has two airports but only one of those accepts international flights. The main airport is located 42 kilometres away from the city centre, but you can reach it easily, on a bus.

Every sightseeing object can be reached using city public transportation that consists of minibuses, trams, or metro. Although these are all cheap services, we recommend purchasing a multiple day ticket beforehand.

What to taste?

Belarus cuisine is very similar to ours. Minsk city locals enjoy potato and meat dishes. Therefore, do not be surprised to find numerous very well-known dishes in a local menu, such as borsch, grated potato pancakes, pea soup with greaves, and dumplings.

If you want to try something new, order some cabbage soup with mushrooms, bacon stew with sausages, or stuffed cabbages. Filling lunch is even better with the addition of fruit or curd pie. For the refreshment, choose some Belarusian sap water, kvass, kompot, mors, or beer.

What to see?

During the Second World War, Belarus lost almost its entire architectural heritage. However, Belarusians did not let themselves get crushed by this. Today you can admire several buildings from the 17th century, like the elaborate Baroque Holy Spirit Cathedral or the refined St. Peter and St. Paul Cathedral. Yet another important faith building is the several ages old St. Maria Magdalen a Church.

Minsk offers many museums that are great for getting acquainted with national culture, like the museums of Ancient Belarusian Art, National Art, and Folk Architecture. However, the most impressive building in Minsk is the National Library of Belarus. This building offers a gorgeous panoramic view of the city.

What to do?

Folk and Rural Life Museum on the outskirts of Minsk allows viewing ancient household relicts and tasting some traditional cheese and bread. The city itself holds a peculiar visiting object, in the form of the apartment building where the assassin of John F. Kennedy, L. H. Oswald, once lived.

If you’re travelling to Minsk in the winter, be sure to try out one of the many city’s open-air skating rinks. Nearby shops will offer unique local crafts and articles, which will be a reminder of the time spent visiting Minsk and a great return gift for your beloved ones.
