Barcelona – Spanish heat on European rhythm

Do you wish to understand Spanish culture better, to dance passionate flamingo and watch the corrida? Although Barcelona lets you do all of this, the city has far more diverse action to offer! City locals call themselves the real Catalans, and they even sometimes mock other Spaniards. In Barcelona you will get to know a lot about cosmopolitan advantages of the city, as well as about many inaccuracies of Spanish stereotypes that you’ve probably heard before.

How to travel?

Barcelona streets are always brimming with people, and full of shouting and sounds of different languages mixing together; numerous flight companies invite many tourists from all over the world. Of course, Europeans can travel to this so-called capital of Catalonia simply by bus, but everyone who prefers comfortable travel may choose a plane flight to the Barcelonan El Prat Airport. The city centre can be easily reached from here.

What to taste?

Barcelona is often called a culinary city. Here, the more important is the Catalan cuisine and not the Spanish one. You simply must taste some “patatas bravas” (fried potatoes with sauce), have a special breakfast dish of squids, and try some Barcelonans’ beloved gin and tonic drinks, which even have their separate tasting bars. Keep in mind that here spirits are only consumed in the evening, so try and wait for the daily tours to be finished, before you start mixing up gin herbs and bittersweet tonic in your glass.

What to see?

This charming port-city will definitely attract your attention with its impressive old town architecture, which combines medieval gothic buildings with numerous church museums, all under the open sky. Barcelona is truly proud of all of these ancient architecture objects, some of which include the Picasso Museum, the La Seu Cathedral, the Sagrada Familia Basilica that is being built for more than 100 years, and the Episcopal Palace. These cultural heritage objects are getting into competition with some of the impressive modern buildings that are gracing the Mediterranean Sea shore and its Vila Olimpica neighbourhood. Here you can see the glass building of “Gas Natural”, the horseshoe-shaped Biomedical Research Park, and a huge sculpture in the form of a golden fish. Many impressions and memories guaranteed!

What to do?

If you still have some time left, head over to the biggest in Europe Camp Nou Stadium that makes every Barcelonan proud. Afterwards, visit the Museum of Contemporary Art, or MACBA. In the evening you can observe professional skateboarders that train here, and you will certainly not be the only one admiring the action.
