Lisbon: the ancient city of world discovery

A net of narrow and labyrinth-like alleys, heavenly beautiful monasteries and vast squares of Lisbon immediately take its visitors straight into the mysterious Middle Ages. Back then, many New World explorers began their journeys from Lisbon, for example, F. Magellan and V. da Gama. The city saw numerous majestic castles and palaces being ruined and rebuilt again. Today, Portugal’s capital city welcomes everyone to take a look at very different times, when the world was boundless.

How to travel?

Modern international Portela airport is located only 7 kilometres away from Lisbon city centre. The distance can be overcome by using a comfortable bus, a taxi, or a rental car.

We recommend using not only those types of public transport for inner-city travels but also the well-developed metro system or the cosy 19th century subway trains. Different city locations may also be reached on the back of a scooter.

What to taste?

Lisbon is an ideal city to get to know more about Portugal’s cuisine. Many capital city restaurants will offer you a wide array of delicious dishes. For example, a usual Lisbon locals’ breakfast consists of a cup of strong coffee and a toast with either some jam or a ham slice.

Lunch is most often a lengthy and grand affair in Portugal. Take a chance to try some delicious meat stew (cozido a portuguesa), fried piglet (leitao asado), and pork stew with clams (carne de porco Alentejana). For a truly delicious dinner, order a perfectly tasting sheep milk cheese queijo da Serra, and a cod dish that could be prepared in 365 different ways (the legendary one is brined and brined cod a la bacalhau).

For dessert, try pastries, called pasteis de Belem, the toucinho do Ceu pie, and some leite creme. Why not also indulge in some sweet and young Portuguese wine.

What to see?

Lisbon Alfama district has a unique feel to it, not unlike a medieval museum, with its playful and colourful narrow alleys. On your way there, also pay a visit to the Castle of St. George, and St. Lucia’s observation point.

Do not forget to admire the striking Church of St. Vincent, the Se Cathedral, the Palace Square, the Belem Tower, and the St. Jeronimos Monastery. You can also go on and visit national bricks-, coaches-, art-, and maritime-themed museums.

What to do?

Lisbon is especially proud for its huge oceanarium and the commercial haven in the form of Chiado district. While city nightlife is best experienced in Bairo Alto district, amazing panoramic views and natural landscapes are guaranteed for visitors of the Sao Pedro de Alcantara Park.

Your holiday can become even more perfect if you also visit nearby beaches. Portuguese capital city is as refined, beautiful, and worth being seen as a Tagus River pebble, smoothed by time and water. Cheap flights to Lisbon let everyone touch that smoothed-by-centuries surface for themselves.
