The pearl of eastern China – Shanghai

Some fifty years ago, Shanghai did not have the best image in the world. However, today this Chinese city is blooming like a lotus. The port city of China has become a true centre of commerce and culture, with one part of the city broadcasting a futuristic vision, while another one is still immersed in the ancient past.

How to travel?

Comfortable and cheap flights to Shanghai reach their finish in the international Pudong airport. Flights from other cities also reach the regional Hongqiao airport. We recommend then taking a bus, a train, a taxi or using the 2nd metro line. Shanghai metro tracks are the longest in the world; therefore, it is not only helpful but also interesting to use local metro.

What to taste?

Eastern China is particularly proud of its rice wine, vinegar and the most expensive tea in the world, the white tea. Many local dishes will use the aforementioned vinegar, and you can buy some white tea as a return gift as well.

One of the most impressive masterpieces of Shanghai cuisine are the Xiao long bao dumplings. Also impressive are the Lion’s head meat balls, made from pork. Definitely worth trying are the dishes of sweet and sour pork, the Beggar’s chicken (chicken roasted wrapped in clay), and soup dumplings (dumplings filled with soup). A delicious surprise awaits those who order a 10 sorts hot pot.

If you still want to try something sweet, choose a dish of Eight-treasure rice with dried fruit. You can quench your thirst with amazing green tea or beer.

What to see?

One of the most striking buildings that make Shanghai proud is the Oriental Pearl tower. The building looks like it has arisen straight from the future, seamlessly joining in with the rest of the urban Pudong area view that has its own peculiarities.

Shanghai old town offers plenty of narrow-towered pagodas. This part of the city will make you feel like you’re in a museum, especially if you visit the Yu Garden and the market nearby. Also just nearby, you can see the gorgeous pagoda of Six Harmonies. City centre opens up into the People’s square, where you will find the best in China museum of Shanghai.

Also worth paying attention is the legendary Shaolin monastery, the forest of dead monks’ monuments, the giant jade Buddha statue, and the Great Wall of China.

What to do?

Take a walk through the old town or in the zoo. You can also choose to spend some active time in the Minhang sports park. Definitely take some time to appreciate the beautiful cities on water outside of Shanghai. Stay open minded during your adventure in Shanghai, and you will be able to get your share of small but intriguing secrets about the ancient city.
