Saint Petersburg – the golden city

The white nights, a city built on top of multiple islands, golden towers and domes that shine from a distance, the shimmering Imperial Winter Palace; these are all synonyms for Saint Petersburg. This second largest Russian city has been established at a relatively late date (1703), but it nevertheless astonishes its guests with a variety of cultural events and architectural masterpieces.

How to travel?

Cheap flights to Saint Petersburg from Vilnius airport will take you to a breathtakingly beautiful urban oasis full of luxury.

Saint Petersburg offers well-developed metro, subway, trolleybus, and bus transport systems. Therefore, your sightseeing trips around the city will be easy and comfortable.

What to taste?

We recommend definitely trying local dish of okroshka, which is a cold soup made with kvass and vegetables, tasting real Siberian dumplings, and ordering elk stew with apricots or bear meat steak (made from a thigh or a loin part of a young bear). For dessert, choose real Russian ice-cream, gingerbread with honey, and crisp pastries (called “angel wings” or khvorost).

What to see?

One of the most prominent city locations is Tsarskoye Selo, the hometown of famous Russian poet Alexander Pushkin. The Catherine Palace is in turn famous for its pompous parks, golden halls, Amber Room, and the majestic baroque Great Hall. Also very memorable is the Church of the Saviour on Blood, which was built using large amounts of precious metals and gemstones. Do not forget to pay a visit to the so-called Russia’s heart, St. Isaac's Cathedral. It was built using more than 400 kg of gold and 16 tonnes of malachite. Continue your acquaintance with the city by visiting the famous Hermitage Museum complex that is considered a true Russian culture treasure house and the world’s great collection of art. Finally, you simply must pay a visit to the Peterhof Palace, named the Russian Versailles. This great Imperial palace is located on the seashore and surrounded by parks, golden statues, and pompous fountains.

What to do?

Only a very small part of all the world’s cities experiences the so-called white nights, and you can observe this phenomenon while visiting Saint Petersburg in June. Although this experience lasts only two weeks, it is truly unforgettable and inspiring. During this period, the city organises night-time festivals and open-air concerts. An inherent white nights tradition is to observe a re-enactment of a pirate battle on the bank of the Neva River, followed by fireworks. Do not feel disappointed if you’re visiting Saint Petersburg at another time of the year. The city offers fun entertainment activities all year long. Saint Petersburg has a lot of canals and little islands, and you could take a fun boat or speedboat trip and take another look at the romantic city.
