Babel-like Sydney, the unofficial centre of Australia

Sydney is a place where people from different nations find a common understanding of each other. Although Sydney is not the capital, the city contains all the main Australian symbols. If Sydney is your travel destination, be prepared for numerous entertainment opportunities, weird fun, and unexpected contrasts.

How to travel?

Travellers from all over the globe reach Sydney by planes that land in the only city’s airport, which is located only 8 kilometres from the city centre. You can cross that distance using a bus, a train, or by renting a car.

Sydney has a vast and quite confusing public transportation system. The city is divided into sections that all have their different tickets. Therefore, if you want to economize, better choose one particular region and purchase its multiple days’ or weeks’ tickets beforehand.

What to taste?

In Sydney, you could meet many different people from China, England, Ireland, Scotland, and Italy. The cultures influence each other, and you can find many unusual dishes in city menus. If you feel like trying out something authentic, choose Australians’ beloved meat pie with cheese and mushrooms.

Locals also like to snack on unique sandwiches with fried eggs, ham, pineapple, salad, and beets. For breakfast, you can choose something lighter version in the form of a toast with Vegemite food paste on. We recommend trying some uniquely tasting pea and meat soup with tomato paste for lunch. Locals prefer to eat these baked dishes with the addition of home-made coffee, beer or wine.

What to see?

The most famous Sydney symbol is of course the gorgeous Sydney Opera House, not unlike the petals of a blossoming flower. Just nearby hangs the former longest in the world and still charming, urban Harbour Bridge. Yet another important sightseeing object in the city is the Sydney Television Tower of impressive heights. It offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the city.

Great weather can be enjoyed in the Royal National Park and in Bondi Beach. After getting refreshed, head over to see the St Mary’s Cathedral and to visit the Australian Museum and the Art Gallery of New South Wales. The city old town is the modern city centre of Sydney, also called The Rocks.

What to do?

While visiting Sydney, wander around the local China Town, to see how the cultures here are assimilated, and you can also find some delicious food here. If active leisure is more to your liking, Bondi Beach offers several water entertainment options. You can get your blood pumping by getting on the famous bridge or the Sydney tower. Return gift ideas can be found in cosy shops or the Saturday flea markets, Glebe. Sydney is a cosmopolitan metropolitan city: you can be sure to find numerous adventures, and you will also discover a charming cultural mix here.
