Useful advice for travelling to Turkmenistan (TKM)

Turkmenistan is a country that hides the mysteries of Asia with many tales of ancient history of the continent. This land of harsh deserts lies just beside the Caspian Sea. The country was closed off from tourists for a long time. After gaining its independence and freeing itself from the Soviet union, Turkmenistan started gaining more and more curious looks from outside, with flights to this country rising in numbers.

Preparing for the trip

There are also no compulsory vaccination requirements for entering the country, but you should still make sure to get vaccinated against hepatitis A and B, typhoid fever, and get a rabies vaccination in case you’re planning to get in contact with wild nature.

Remember that a visa is required for entering Turkmenistan. It is issued after submitting an application together with a passport that is valid for at least six months, and which also has two or more blank pages available. You will need to pay 140 euros for such a visa, and it is obtained in 10 to 15 work days.

Before you head out, make sure to understand that Turkmenistan is still to this day one of the most closed off counties in the world. Do not be surprised after observing that traffic has been closed off in some places or that some officers may be watching you. Streets are exceptionally clean and tidy, and there are fines to be applied for littering and smoking: in the street or even in a moving car.

Transportation and travel charges

Country guests often rent old vintage cars from the Soviet Union era and travel this way by hiring a driver. Buses and trains are also available tin this country. One litre of gasoline costs 0.23 euro, and a one kilometre long taxi ride will cost you approximately 0.52 euro.

You can pay for your purchases using the official local currency, the Turkmenistan manat (TNT). One manat is equal to 0.27 euro. Living costs in Turkmenistan are lower than in Lithuania. In local shops, a 1.5 litre water bottle will cost you 40 euro cents; you can buy one kilogram of beef for about 5.75 euros, while one kilogram of chicken breast will cost you approximately 3.49. You can order a delicious meal in a cheap local restaurant for approximately 8.39 euros.

Additional information:

  • The country belongs to the UTC +5 time zone, and no summer time changes are applied.
  • Official language is Turkmen, but you will also easily communicate with the locals in Russian.
  • Distance from Vilnius to Turkmenistan’s capital Ashgabat is 3107 kilometres.
  • Best return gifts choices

The best way to memorize your trip to Turkmenistan is to purchase some dried fruit, spices, various nuts, good quality fabrics, glass and ceramics products, and traditional Turkmen paraphernalia highly popular among tourists.
