Useful advice for travelling to China (CHN)

Unique, authentic and rapidly modernising, China is an impressive country that will only leave the strongest of impressions. Often called the empire of the skies, the country is full of surprises that will catch the attention of even the most experienced travellers. Flights to China are perfect for those who feel bored of usual European travel routes and wish to explore one of the oldest and most mysterious civilisations in the world.

Preparing for the trip

Before starting your journey, you should get vaccinated against malaria and hepatitis A and B. Poor sanitary conditions and inconsideration towards nutritional and hygiene requirements, along with insufficient water filtering and excessive littering are the reasons behind the widespread typhoid fever infection in China. Therefore, it is necessary to also get vaccinated against this disease before heading out.

A visa is required to enter the country: it will be issued by the nearest Chinese embassy. Travellers should apply for health insurance before their journey begins.

Transportation and travel charges

Trains are the best way to travel across different provinces of China. This way, you will be able to fully enjoy nature sights and economize at the same time. Bus services are also cheap but the trip will take longer, while the fastest way to explore the country is to get on a local plane. You could also choose rental bicycles for a ride across rural areas of the country. However, most cities limit the count of bicycle riders in order to reduce road congestion. Usually, a one kilometre long taxi ride will cost you approximately 0.31 euro, and a litre of gasoline will cost you 0.89 euro. When choosing between taxis, it is best to remember that most drivers do not speak English. Therefore, you should write down your travel destination on a piece of paper beforehand.

You can pay for your purchases using the official local currency, the Chinese yuan (CNY). One yuan is equal to approximately 7.39 Chinese yuan. Living costs in China are slightly lower than in Lithuania. For example, you will pay 3 euros to eat in a restaurant and approximately 0.50 euro for a small water bottle. You can buy one kilogram of chicken for about 3.50 euros and order some vegetable soup for 0.80 to 1.50 euros.

When choosing what souvenirs to buy, it’s worth paying attention to traditional Chinese lacquerware: handmade wooden products that are covered with special kind of lacquer. Mosaics with various plant and bid motifs are also highly popular. You should consider purchasing some traditional Chinese paper cut-outs that will usually depict dragons or birds.

China is the home of silk; therefore, acquiring some silk products is a must. A gift consisting of Chinese glass products, handmade rugs, apparel, carvings, bamboo products, or reproductions of ancient cultural relicts will also pleasantly surprise your loved ones and friends.
